Man Fined RM3000 for Spitting at Staff That Asked Him To Follow SOP

We’ve been there before, going to a grocery store run only to be reminded by the staff to wear our masks etc. or to follow the standard operating procedures (SOP) that is set in place; as a decent human being, we adhere by it almost all of the time, but this man took it a step further from refraining to comply and resorted to spit on the staff that asked him to do so instead.

Due to his actions, the 47-year-old man from Taman Rasi Jaya, Ipoh was then fined RM3,000 at the Ipoh’s Magistrate’s Court on Friday, December 4th

The incident happened on Monday at 8:40pm when fishmonger, M Gunalan was asked by a store employee form Lahad Datu 2 to simply comply with the standard operating procedure (SOP) set under the Conditional Movement Control Order (CMCO) and to wear a mask.

In a 35-second video of the incident, the man was then seen and heard using various forms of vulgarity to argue and spitting at said staff.

Magistrate Noor Azreen Liana Mohd Darus found Gunalan guilty of committing the offence under section 509 of the Penal Code.

According to Bernama, deputy public prosecutor Nur Asmaniza Mohammad had asked the court to impose an appropriate penalty on the accused as well because his actions had caused inter-racial sensitivity.

Gunalan’s lawyer had asked for leniency saying that the accused was out of his job due to Covid-19 and regrets his actions as well.

He then proceeded to pay the fine of RM3,000 as imposed by the Magistrate’s Court as he could’ve been jailed for five years under the offence.
